Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as a teachers aide she dropped out of university. Being a poet She began to sing in poetry performances live. She later teamed along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. At the Roots show, she revealed her artist status. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to experience the performing arts during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign with Hidden Beach Recordings.
